Brenda Wilson Stephens has dedicated her life to education, public service, and expanding access to knowledge. Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, she graduated from Northern High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts from Winston-Salem State University and a Master’s in Library and Information Sciences from North Carolina Central University.
Her service began in the U.S. Army and grew into a mission to reach underserved communities. In 1976, she drove the bookmobile throughout Orange County, bringing vital library services to those in need. This commitment to accessibility shaped her career and transformed countless lives.
In 1993, Stephens became the first Black citizen to lead a regional library system in North Carolina as Director of the Hyconeechee Regional Library System, serving Orange, Caswell, and Person counties. Under her leadership, libraries became essential hubs for learning and opportunity. Beyond libraries, Stephens spent over 20 years on the Orange County Schools Board of Education, including serving as President of the North Carolina School Boards Association. She led through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring critical support for students and educators.
Her lifelong dedication to education and public service has left a lasting legacy. In recognition of her impact, Governor Roy Cooper honored her with induction into the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2024. Stephens remains a champion for equitable education, inspiring future generations through her leadership and unwavering commitment to helping others.
