Dr. Fowler, a native of Dunn, North Carolina, has dedicated his life to patient care, medical education, and cancer research. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina (UNC), where he also completed his residency and a fellowship in OB-GYN.
From 1971 to 1973, he served in the U.S. Army at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, earning the Army Commendation Medal for his excellence in medical care. His service remains a source of great pride, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others.
Dr. Fowler played a pivotal role in advancing cancer care at UNC. He was one of three oncologists who wrote the first proposal to the National Cancer Institute for what became the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, later serving as its associate director. Additionally, he founded UNC’s Division of Gynecologic Oncology, leading it for over 30 years. He also served as Vice Chair of the department from 1983 to 2009 and directed the residency program from 1983 to 1997, mentoring countless physicians.
Currently, Dr. Fowler is Associate Dean for Medical Alumni Affairs at UNC. After decades of dedicated service, he will retire in May 2025, leaving a lasting legacy in patient care, medical education, and oncology research.
