It was June of 1950 – the beginning of the Korean “police action”. Dad worked his way through Brown University, graduated with honors and immediately decided to enlist in the Army. His platoon was sent to “Heartbreak Ridge”, where they patrolled the forward face of the ridge at night, moving from one end of the line to another in foxholes.
He would never speak of the war when we were growing up, but while writing his memoir years later said, “There is no other set of circumstances that guarantees you will see the best that men have in them”.
Haven died at the age of 90 in 2019.
